A recent Forbes article indicated that the perception of power-more so than gender-may have to do with women’s challenges with negotiation. And while this may be true, it does not change the outcome-we see little female influence at the top ranks of organizations. The mind is powerful and shapes our interpretations of events and experiences in the workplace. When driven by fear, it can overwhelm us with a constant dialogue of self-criticism. In a state of constant mental negativity, our leadership, influence, and confidence are undermined. Indeed, changing our mindset from negative to positive can literally change our perspective and enable greater leadership performance, influence, and advancement.
Could it really be that simple? In my experience, simple, yes; easy, no. Continue Reading…
On Tuesday, June 21, the Department of Labor formally proposed its long-awaited rule to more stringently regulate so-called "persuader" activity. Persuader activity refers to steps that employers may take to understand and respond to union organizing campaigns. The proposed rule can be found here: http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2011-06-21/html/2011-14357.htm

As previously reported upon and highlighted in the NASCO Summit presentation of U.S. Chamber Labor Policy Expert Glenn Spencer in May, the NLRB and DoL have been considering numerous actions that would favor unions. While sweeping law changes such as EFCA will never see the light of day, there is still much that the Dem controlled NLRB and DoL can do to assist unions short of legislation, and in late June, two such pro-union actions were put in motion. One, an NLRB proposed rule, would make changes to current filing, notification, and litigation procedures related to representation elections — aimed at shortening the time of such elections. The other, a DoL proposed rule, would more stringently regulate so-called "persuader" activity — aimed to discourage employers from seeking outside counsel to understand and respond to union organizing campaigns. Today, I had the privilege to attend an event hosted by the fine folks over at GovWin. The event combined all the aspects that government contractors really need to improve their skills and their networks; networking, a short but highly interested deep dive on a pertinent topic and a longer panel discussion from what I heard described by attendees as "the most knowledgeable panel I’ve ever seen at one of these things."
Sounds like a win to me. My impression was as follows:
The venue was fantastic and everyone involved really did a great job of keeping things running smoothly. The food & drink was tasty and appropriate. The GovWin staff really did a great job of keeping people flowing where they needed to go and the dreaded line to pickup badges moved quickly.
The first portion of the seated event was a brief but highly informative deep dive on the upcoming FY 2012 budget as it relates to government contractors. The important takeaways were:
The second portion of the event was a roundtable with top industry experts to discuss best practices in business development and capture. The two most important takeaways I got from the roundtable, as a non contractor without the day-to-day practical experience to draw from their examples, were as follows:
The last thing I learned is that GovWin plans to hold these events quarterly! If you can’t attend or if you aren’t in the DC region, not to worry, they live stream the events. Check out their events page HERE to learn about upcoming events.

Aside from benefiting from the tax breaks the Obama administration is offering, retail recruiters will need to keep recruiting costs low and retention rates high in order to afford this major growth.
